  • Belgian Soldier's Grave

The distinctive headstone marks the last resting place of Victor-Joseph De Martelaere, a Belgian soldier who was seriously wounded following Germany's invasion of Belgium in 1914. He, along with other wounded Belgian soldiers, was evacuated to England, first to a hospital in Birmingham and then to the newly established V.A.Hospital at Norton Hall, Mickleton. He arrived there on 11th November 1914 but had been so seriously injured that he died of a cerebral embolism on 4th December. He was buried with full military honours in Mickleton churchyard on 7th December.
