  • Stonehouse Farm - a history

N side of High Street, opposite the King's Arms

    Camera facing SW

Original cottage at back and some of the farm buildings, built in brick with 'tumbling' in at gable, if that is the term when the inset is stone.  Roof Cotswold stone.  Windows - ground floor recently modernised; formerly 3-light wooden frames, single side-hung casements under a brick arch.  Difference in floor level on first floor where cottage is joined to main house.  Date of rebuilding or addition of large stone house at front not found in deeds (which begin in 1676, earlier ones apparently lost).  Slate roof.  3s.  Sash windows.  Stone chimneys (3).  Back wall of house mostly brick with small section in ashlar with two-light stone mullion and dh window with stone surround and label mould.  A fascinating problem - to discover what was on the site of the present house at the time it was a substantial farm.
